Phi Theta Kappa Nu Xi Chapter Holds Spring Induction

HILLSBORO, TEXAS— The Nu Xi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) held its spring induction ceremony virtually on April 9, 2020, at 6:30 p.m. The Nu Xi Chapter’s Membership Drive ran from Feb. 17-28, 2020. Membership in PTK requires a student have a 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA in all coursework attempted at Hill College, be TSI complete, complete either 12 hours towards an AA, AAT, AS, or AAS degree or six hours towards a one-year certificate program.

The event was kicked off with PTK Five Star Advisor Mr. Jim Williamson welcoming inductees and guests.

The officer elections for the 2020-2021 academic year were announced and will be held April 20-24.

Hill College's members of the All-Texas Academic Team were recognized and congratulations go to Christina Byrd, Ty Mears and Claire Vallaster for achieving this honor.

The Nu Xi chapter's first inductees in the Texas District III Hall of Honor were presented with a certificate and Hall of Honor pin. Hill College's inductees in the Hall of Honor for the 2019 year were President Monica Frasier, Hillsboro Representative Tamela Brogdon, Burleson Collegiate High School Representative Laura Richardson, and Recording Officer Jay Dingman. Honorary Membership and Stole of Gratitude presented to Aly Engstrom of United Way of Johnson County.

The Hill College PTK Nu Xi Chapter announced their Honors in Action 2019 award received at the 2020 Texas Regional Convention. Honors in Action is a yearly project undertaken by a PTK chapter. The Nu Xi chapter submitted their first project detailing the research and action they took in 2019 based on the program guide focusing on “Transformations: Acknowledging, Assessing, and Achieving Change.” The chapter chose “Theme 1: Networks of Life” from the nine options they were given. They researched food insecurity on community college campuses and opened the PTK Pantry/Rebel Resource Room on the Johnson County campus in Cleburne. The chapter received the Honors in Action Award of Merit for Networks of Life in recognition of their 2019 Honors in Action Project.

The advisors also announced the 2020 Honors in Action project, “To the Seventh Generation: Inheritance and Legacy” and the Nu Xi chapter has chosen the theme "Expressions of Truth" to research and implement in 2020.

Hill College President, Dr. Pam Boehm, congratulated the students who joined the Hill College chapter. Dr. Kerry Schindler, Vice President of Instruction, also spoke to the new inductees, congratulating them on their achievements and welcomed them to this fellowship of scholarly endeavor.

In closing the event, PTK Five Star Advisor Dr. Jenny Corder congratulated the new inductees and expressed her gratitude for those who joined in to celebrate this special milestone for this group of students.
